It is traditional to pour a libation of a the last captain's favorite drink on the shutter plank before installation, hence the name whiskey plank. A Shutter Plank Party is a cause for celebration among boat builders and one that will be honored for Freda.
Freda is a 1885 gaff sloop being restored at the Spaulding Center, and one of the last of a style of sailboat that used to be common on San Francisco Bay. She is the oldest private sailing yacht on the west coast.

Photos of new workshop for the Youth Apprentice Program starting at the Spaulding Center in May. High-school aged students will build a 16' sailing dinghy designed by Myron Spaulding and Tom Wylie. Pictured is a 12 foot Norwegian sailing/rowing pram built by a previous class.

Pursuit is a 82' "M" class racing sloop built in 1929 in Germany. It has been undergoing an extensive restoration in Sausalito.
